Apple co-founder and visionary CEO Steve Jobs has passed away at the age of 56.

Apple posted the following statement on their website:

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

Below are pieces of remembrance from some of the people surrounding Steve Jobs.

Statement issued by Apple’s Board of Directors:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

Steve Jobs’ family have provided the following statement:

Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family.

In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories.

We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.

CEO Tim Cook just issued the memo below internally to the company:

Team,

I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.

We are planning a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon. If you would like to share your thoughts, memories and condolences in the interim, you can simply email rememberingsteve@apple.com. No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.

Tim

Apple released OS 10.7 Lion and it is the first Update to be available from the MacApp Store as an approximately 4 GB download at $31.99. While most reviewers are happy with it, a fair proportion are not, due mainly to it’s quirky GUI (e.g. reverse scrolling) and as usual, many mainline Applications are yet to be updated to work properly. This update is a quantum leap in look, operation and philosophy by Apple, and not just an evolutionary upgrade. The price has been kept low by savings in DVDs, packaging and carriage possible by providing it as a download. This is the first time in my Mac history of some 17 years that I have not ordered and waited for a DVD Installer Disc to arrive by mail, or purchase from an Apple Store. For more details: http://www.apple.com/au/macosx/

People have been doing the same things on computers for years. Clicking. Scrolling. Installing. Saving. With OS X Lion, we’ve challenged the accepted way of doing things by introducing new features that change the way you use a computer.

Apple has released a whole new range of faster MacBook Pros. Faster CPUs but still using standard hard drives. They now include Intel’s new optic transfer technology, Light Peak, now known as Thunderbolt!

http://www.apple.com/au/macbookpro/features.html

Introducing Thunderbolt.
The fastest, most versatile I/O ever in a notebook.

Imagine accessing multiple streams of uncompressed HD video — from your notebook — at speeds that let you edit an HD feature film in real time. That’s how Thunderbolt technology will connect the next generation of high-performance peripherals to the next generation of computers — starting with MacBook Pro. Ultrafast and ultraflexible, the Thunderbolt pipeline is more than 12 times faster than FireWire 800 and up to 20 times faster than USB 2.0 and it offers unprecedented expansion capabilities. It changes what you can do on a notebook.

The Thunderbolt port will give you plug-and-play performance with a whole new world of Thunderbolt peripherals, as well as with the Apple LED Cinema Display and other Mini DisplayPort peripherals. You can daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt devices, including up to two high-resolution displays.4 And with support for video and eight-channel audio, it’s easy to connect HDMI-compatible devices — like your TV and home stereo — using the HDMI adapter you already have. Current VGA, DVI and DisplayPort adapters are also supported.

The MacBook Pro retains the Firewire 800 port.

I think this meeting the most successful and enjoyable HBMUG meeting in our two year history.
I have had some really good feedback.
It also allowed better social interaction between members.
There was a good “buzz” in the room. Many people have told me how much they learned and how good it was to have many people present
who could fix just about any problem presented. We will be repeating this format regularly, space permitting!

20 members attended, many bringing their Macs, including two Desktops, an iMac 20″ and a 2003 iMac G4 17″ (middle top photo )
