The Hervey Bay Mac Users Group (HBMUG) was formed in May 2008. We meet on the first Thursday of each month in The Lakes Room at the Hervey Bay RSL Club, commencing at 7 pm, and on the first Tuesday of the month at the Sixty and Better Group, Dan Dinna House, Torquay, from 1pm – 3pm [See the NEWS PAGE for venue details]
The Group was formed to bring together Apple Mac users and to encourage Windows users to change to a simpler and more friendly computer. We are a group of Mac users who want to help and learn from each other. Our experience ranges from newcomers to Mac, numerous switchers from Windows, right up to more advanced and very experienced users. We try to keep meetings simple. Many of our members are older people with limited computer knowledge. With our members’ combined knowledge, we can usually solve most user’s problems and queries. We now have a panel of Experts who can answer specialist questions.
We have no formal organisation or committees. Our membership is steadily growing and we are looking for more people to join us. Many of our recent members, tired of the bad experience of constantly patching security flaws in Windows and the ever constant dread of becoming infected with a worm, virus or malware, have found that using a Mac to be a relaxing experience and a far better place to be.
We now have 99 members, nearly half of whom are female. So ladies should feel at home.
Most of us own relatively new Macs, iMacs and MacBooks and are running OSX (pronounced OS Ten) Snow leopard, or Leopard. We have a few members with older venerable machines, some up to 10 years old and yet able to give very reliable service still running an older version of OSX.
Our evening and main meeting venue at the Hervey Bay RSL, Pialba is centrally located with excellent car parking, audio- visual and general facilities. We are able to connect to the internet. We present two or three topics and demonstrations [see News:June Meeting] each meeting along with a Q & A session and then general discussion and social interaction. To see our list of topics, please see the Schedule of Topics. Explore our website and you will find many interesting items to assist and inform you further. The daytime meeting at 60+ is aimed at beginners and for members who are unable attend the main night meetings.
If you currently use a Mac, are thinking of buying one, or are one of the many people wanting to, or who have recently switched from Windows, you are welcome to join our group. There is no joining or annual fee, so why not come along and chat with other Mac users. We do have a small charge payable (currently $5) only when you attend a meeting to cover hire of our venue. Tea and Coffee are available. Members (other than visitors to Hervey Bay) are requested to join the RSL in order to comply with their regulations. If you do not wish to, then you need to get another RSL member to sign you in please.
Any level of expertise is welcome, and if you are switching from Windows, you are especially welcome. More info here (Recent statistics showed that a large percentage of visitors to our website were current Windows users)
Our aim is to make everybody feel comfortable regardless of their experience.
